Cool Internet Stats
Around the end of each year there are a tonne of articles and Posts about the top 5 or ten of the year. This isn’t one of those Posts however I thought I’d share a few statistics from the ‘Online world’ that have caught my eye recently:
Massive WordPress Popularity
WordPress use is growing at a remarkable rate. Of particular glee to Matt Mullenweg and others from Automattic (the people behind WordPress) must be thatt WordPress growth isn’t just with Bloggers and small Websites; nearly 15% of the top million Websites World Wide are powered by WordPress. In addition, more than one in five new Websites in the U.S.A. are powered by WordPress.

Android Apps growth is Spectacular
In December 2011 reached a significant milestone; 10 Billion app downloads from the Android Market. Even more spectacular however is the rate at which download growth is occurring. Over one billion apps are being downloaded each month!

Whilst revenues are higher for the Apple App store as opposed to the Android Market, the market-share of new Smartphones sold in Q3 2011 is significantly higher for Android that Apple according to Gartner.
The Android OS accounted for 52.5 percent of smartphone sales to end users in the third quarter of 2011 …, more than doubling its market share from the third quarter of 2010. Gartner
Mobile Commerce takes-off
Looking at the visitor analytics for Websites it is notable how many people are now using mobile devices to view Websites. It is becoming increasingly important to design Websites to be appealing and viewable both on mobile devices as well as more traditional computers and laptops. Mobile shopping has really increased significantly this year. AS eBay noted:
Mobile users made up 6.6% of all buying, up from 2.3% last year. As noted earlier this week on Ink, eBay Mobile stated U.S. shoppers spent two and a half times more on eBay’s mobile channel than Cyber Monday in 2011. Also, PayPal Mobile experienced a 552% year-over-year increase in global mobile payment volume for Cyber Monday activity.
These are just three of the incredible Internet and technology related stats recently made available.
