What is a Responsive Theme

As a WordPress developer I’m seeing a significant increase in the number of customers asking for Websites or Blogs that look good on both computers/laptops and Android Phones / iPhones / iPads. It’s quite remarkable how many more people are viewing the Web through mobile devices such as smart-phones. Never mind the many articles out there showing the growth of mobile-devices; just looking at my customers Website analytics data shows a marked increase in the importance of ensuring a great Website viewing experience for smart-phones and tablet-computers.

What is a Responsive Website Design

HTML5 Powered with CSS3 / Styling, and Device Access
Without going into technical details, a Responsive Website design is one that adjusts according to the screen size (and technologies) that the viewer is using. An iPhone screen, for example, is far narrower than the screen of a desktop computer. If the Webpage doesn’t adjust to the screen size then on a small screen the text and images will be very small unless you zoom (in which case the viewer needs to scroll horizontally and vertically).

The designer of a Responsive Website has various CSS, HTML and other resources at his/her disposal to relayout a Page, resize aspects of the Page or even hide elements according to the device used by the visitor to view the Webpage. There aren’t two or more Websites (i.e. one specifically for mobile devices) created to cater for the various needs; there is one Website that adjusts to the viewers device and settings.
