Top Tech Companies by Region

I was very interested in ‘The Infotech 100′ article in the Businessweek June 1, 2009 edition. For me, one of the really interesting columns was the ‘Country’ of each company. Businessweek doesn’t summarise the country data so here is a table showing the countries represented and how many companies each have in the Businessweek ‘Infotech 100 2009′:

The U.S.A. therefore is by far and away most represented in the list with 43% of all companies on the list. The rest of the Americas have seven companies from five countries. Half of all companies included in the Infotech 100 are therefore from North and South America.

China figures relatively poorly with only 5% of the companies as does India with 4% and Japan with only 3%. Other Asian countries however do well; Korea with 6% and Taiwan with 10% (Australia, where I live and Hong Kong are both represented with two companies…last time I checked, Hong Kong was part of China but we’ll side with Businessweek and pretend that Hong Kong is it’s own country).

The Middle East is represented with 2% (one company each for Israel and Kuwait) and Africa comes in with 3% with South Africa being the only African Country represented.

Europe has eight countries represented (inclusive of Turkey) but with only 13% of all companies represented.

In terms of geographical regions here is the breakdown of where the top tech companies are from:
