Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE Web Statistics

As 2010 draws to a close, here are a few numbers to show just how significant and popular the Web (and associated services) is:

Email Spam Stats

If you think that you get alot of spam then consider that ‘in 2010 an average of 183 billion spam emails were sent per day’. Perhaps it’s time to thank your Gmail, Hotmail or whatever email service you use spam filter for actually doing a great job! … for those interested in comment spam then consider this; Akismet (the awesome spam comment filter from the same people as WordPress, has saved an incredible 20,892,632,758 spam comments from cluttering up Blogs (that’s about 30 million spam comments identified by Akismet daily).

YouTube Stats

In 2010 people watched more than 700 billion YouTube videos! WTF! That is 700,000,000,000 (assuming that YouTube use the short-scale billion ie. 9 zeroes /109). Over 35 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.

WordPress Stats

There are over 16 million wordpress.com Blogs and over ‘16.7 million active installations of the WordPress.org software’. WordPress.com  gets over 2.3 billion page-views per month and over 500,000 new Posts are published every day. Also, almost 8% of the top million WebSites are powered by WordPress. Oh, and 900,000 people join WordPress.com each month.

Website Stats

So how many Websites and Webpages are there? The Linkscape Web Index indexes an incredible ‘39,821,634,471 (39.8 Billion)’ Pages and they aren’t indexing near the number of Webpages that Google, Yahoo/Bing etc. are. There are still very many Pages that aren’t being indexed so the true number of Websites and Webpages out there is much much bigger (the ‘Deep web’ is still a challenge for ‘bots). So, when someone next asks you why their Site isn’t appearing top of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), ask them why Google, Bing etc. would see their Page as more relevant than the millions or billions of other Pages with similar content!

Flickr Stats

Think you take a lot of photos? Just consider how popular the photo sharing services are. As at September 2010, 3,000 images per minute were uploaded to Flickr and over 5 billion images had been uploaded. Flickr is one of the most popular image sharing services however there are many others out there.

Facebook Stats

The numbers for Facebook, like YouTube, are simply astounding! Here is a summary of just a subset of the dazzling stats; people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook, there are over 500 million active users and half of these access Facebook EVERY DAY, 200 million active users access Facebook through mobile devices etc. etc.

Twitter Stats

When Twitter officially launched three years ago many doubted there was a need or demand for micro-blogging.; there were 25 billion Tweets in 2010 and 100 million new registered accounts.

Smartphone Stats

Over 300,000 Android powered devices are activated every day whilst Apple claims 270,000 iPhone activations daily. Market share of Android devices is growing rapidly whilst RIM (Blackberry) is losing more market share than iPhone. Smartphone sales increased by 96% worldwide from 2009 to 2010 whilst mobile phone sales increased by 35%. Nokia leads the field in mobile device sales whilst Samsung and LG occupy second and third highest sales.

Happy 2011 everyone!
