New Minimum Requirements for using WordPress

It has been announced that WordPress version 3.2 (we are currently at version 3.1.2) will have new minimum requirements. Version 3.2 is expected to be released at the end of June 2011. At present the minimum requirements, in relation to PHP and MySQL, to run WordPress are:

  • PHP version 4.3 or greater
  • MySQL version 4.1.2 or greater

the new minimum requiremets will be:

  • PHP 5.2.4
  • MySQL 5.0.15

The previous PHP and MySQL minimum versions were both superseded many years back (PHP v4.3 and MySQL v 2.1.2 were superseded in 2004).

Any decent Webhost will be running versions compatible with WordPress version 3.2. If you are at all concerned it’s worth contacting your host to check the versions of PHP and MySQL they are using.
